A visit to the Vessel (TKA), Hudson Yards, NYC

NYC has a stunning new landmark to check out. Currently know as the Vessel (TKA) , it’s waiting for you to visit and take photos with the official hashtag #hellohudsonyards !

Where is it? How much does it cost?

Located in the new Hudson Yards (32nd Street/11th Avenue), just off The High Line and next to the new supermall, it’s a true piece of art from British designer Thomas Heatherwick.

To go inside tickets are needed. It’s free (The good news). The not so great news is you have to plan ahead by requesting a ticket at this site. As it’s so new they are in high demand. Every morning at 8.00 am Eastern time additional same-day tickets are made available, as well as tickets for an additional day as part of a ticketing window offered. On Day 4 of it being open I went to the site to request tickets. After 45 mins of being in an online queue I was able to select a time for that evening.

We chose to get a window of time between sunset and sundown so we could experience in daylight and in semi-darkness. It’s open from 10.00 am to 9.00 pm Eastern every day. The ticket system is good from the point of view that is limits the amount of people who show up! Our entire visit took us 20 minutes.

How fit do I need to be? How do I get there?

You don’t need to be a iron-man or even have your workout gear on to visit the 150-foot-tall , 16 stories, 154 staircase structure. The way the intricate staircase is designed you take small flights of stairs and are on one of the 80 landings before you know it. There is one elevator if walking up stairs is not for you. Strollers, backpacks, food or drink are not allowed.

You can get to the Vessel by taking the 7 Subway to it’s final stop on the West side of Manhattan – 34th street, Hudson Yards subway station. We chose to walk from Penn Station on 8th Avenue and 33rd Street. Give yourself 15-20 mins if you choose to do that.

Worth it?

Absolutely. I highly recommend you go check it out. It’s a stunning, visually appealing and super stylish landmark that makes for a perfect start or end to walking The High Line, visiting the supermall or enjoying the fabulous new restaurants in the area.

What shall it be called?

The Vessel (TKA), March 2019

The Vessel (TKA) is not the final name. We await for the official name. Many names like Shawarma, Doner Kebab, New York’s staircase, Honeycomb are flying around the twitter-verse. My friend and I were trying to be super fancy and came up with HYve. HY for Hudson Yards and a play on the word hive (as it looks like a hive) and the word five (for the Five Boroughs of NYC!). What do you think? EDIT: My friend Christina and Glennis have suggested Pine Cone!
