A day trip out of NYC – Visiting Storm King Art Center

Get out of the city!

NYC is a fab city but the desire to get out of the hustle and bustle is something all city dwellers experience. July 4th holiday weekend the urge hit us. Where do you go on a day trip out of NYC? North, South, West or East – there are a lot of options. For jaw dropping sculptures, countryside walking and a quick yoga class for Saturday visitors we urge you to visit Storm King Art Center.

Storm King Art Center – Cornwall, NY

What is it?

A gorgeous open-air museum of outdoor sculptures. The scale of this center is impressive. 500-acres in fact (as per the official website!).

Where is it and how much does it cost?

Just over 60 miles north west of NYC in the town of Cornwall. Check there website and use the GPS address they suggest of 1 Museum Road, New Windsor, NY 12553.

It cost us $18 each when we visited in July 2019. You’ll get a map and information on current exhibitions when you pay at the gate.

How do you get there?

Driving was our mode of transport. We left the city around 8.00am, went over the George Washington Bridge, up the Palisades Interstate Parkway and with no traffic where there at 9.30am. Rookie mistake. The gates don’t open til right on 10am so we had to wait.

Train options from NYC Grand Central or Penn Station are available. In the weekend there is a shuttle service from Beacon Train Station to the center. Bus options from Port Authority could be for you especially if you want to include a shopping trip to Woodbury Commons Premium Outlet.

What day?

It’s closed Monday and Tuesday. For less people I would assume week days are good. We choose Saturday as liked the idea of the free 1 hour yoga class which is only offered on that day and starts at 10.15am.

I recommend getting to Storm King when it firsts open so you can see it without the hordes of people. You also don’t want to be doing all your walking over the property when the sun is at its hottest!

What will you see there?

A lot. There is no shortage of sculptures in all sizes and materials. Below is a few snaps I took. It’s awe inspiring.

What do you need to take?

Bug spray, hat, water, sun screen are essentials. A yoga mat, if taking part in the yoga class on Saturday. Good walking shoes are a must. Leave the summer sandals or flip flops to change into later.

What else do you need to know?

There is an elevator down to the South Fields or a Tram you can utilize as the property is massive. You might want to mix in walking and the tram to ensure you see as much as you can.

Food and drinks can be purchased at a variety of places. We didn’t bother except for a buying a coffee at the little cart up near the gallery.

Bikes can be rented on a first come basis. You can’t bring your own bike.

Check out the latest rules at the official website.

Enjoy!
